Photographed at the Race of Champions, Brands Hatch, 22nd March 1970, this image shows Bruce McLaren (1937–1970) in the cockpit of his McLaren M14A — his name written in script along the bodywork of the car he built himself.
Founder of McLaren Motor Racing, Le Mans winner, two-time Can-Am Champion, and winner of the Race of Champions at this very circuit two years earlier, McLaren was at the height of his powers in 1970 — a driver, engineer and constructor of rare and restless genius.
This photograph carries a particular weight. Bruce McLaren was killed on 2nd June 1970 at Goodwood while testing his new Can-Am car — just ten weeks after this image was taken. He was 32 years old. The team, the car, and the name he built from nothing would go on to become one of the most celebrated in the history of the sport. This is one of the last photographs of him racing.
