Photographed in the pit lane at the Race of Champions, Brands Hatch, 22nd March 1970, this image shows Chris Amon (1943–2016) in the cockpit of his works March 701 — number 3 — the STP and Firestone livery unmistakable against the stark concrete of the pit wall.

A New Zealander widely regarded as one of the most naturally gifted drivers of his era, Amon was one of the lead works drivers for March Engineering in their debut Formula One season. The March 701 was a remarkable achievement — designed and built in just twelve weeks — and Amon was central to its development. Just weeks after this photograph was taken he won the International Trophy at Silverstone in the same car, one of the standout performances of his career.

Respected by every driver on the grid, Chris Amon brought pace, precision and an understated brilliance to every car he drove. This image captures him at the heart of one of the most exciting new teams in the paddock, at the start of a season full of promise.
