Photographed at the Race of Champions, Brands Hatch, 22nd March 1970, this close portrait shows Denny Hulme OBE (1936–1992) in the cockpit of his McLaren Cars M14A, in quiet conversation with his crew — his name written in the same script as his teammate Bruce McLaren's on the car alongside.
Known throughout the paddock as "The Bear", Hulme was the 1967 Formula One World Champion with Brabham — the first and still only New Zealander to claim the title. Understated, unassuming and utterly uninterested in celebrity, he was nonetheless one of the most respected and consistent drivers of his era. He finished third in the Race of Champions that day, a result that reflected exactly the kind of quiet, controlled excellence he brought to every circuit.
His connection to McLaren ran deeper than most. He had been with the team since 1968, was a close friend of Bruce McLaren, and would continue to race under the McLaren banner until his retirement in 1974 — carrying the team through one of the most difficult periods in its history.
