Photographed at the Race of Champions, Brands Hatch, 22nd March 1970, this image shows Sir Jack Brabham OBE(1926–2014) at ease in the cockpit of his Brabham BT33 - number 16 - surrounded by mechanics and onlookers in the paddock. The smile says everything about a man completely in his element.
Brabham set the fastest lap of the race that day, a fitting demonstration of the pace that had defined his career. Three-time Formula One World Champion — winning the title in 1959, 1960 and 1966 with his own team, Motor Racing Developments — he remains the only driver in history to win the World Championship in a car bearing his own name.
This was his final season in Formula One. Just weeks before this photograph was taken, he had won the South African Grand Prix in this very car — the last World Championship victory of his remarkable career. The 1970 season would prove a fitting farewell to one of the sport's true founding figures.
